Desal CoTT

Reliable Supply for the Nation

The Desalination Company of Trinidad and Tobago (DesalCoTT), a fully owned local company rated in 2015 as being one of the top four companies in its field in the world. It is a single purpose entity originally formed in 1999 to sell 24 million imperial gallons per day of high quality desalinated sea water to the Trinidad & Tobago Water and Sewerage Authority for 20 years on a build/own operate basis. The total responsibility to design, build, finance and operate the plant would cost the desalination plant a significant sum.

Originally a joint venture between Trinidadian company HKESL and USA based General Electric; DesalCoTT became 100% locally owned in 2012 through funding provided in part by First Citizens. Always interested in nation building initiatives, First Citizens granted HKESL a loan to buyout General Electric’s 40% share thereby making DesalCoTT a wholly owned local company.

Since then, the facility has increased production capacity from 24 million to 40 million gallons of water per day supplying a significant portion of the total water produced in Trinidad. To date the plant supplies water to the Point Lisas Industrial Estate and its environs.
